Expressing sympathy artinya mengungkapkan simpati. Ketika kita
mendengar seseorang sedang sedih atau terluka, biasanya kita
menyatakan rasa simpati kepadanya. Rasa simpati digunakan untuk
menunjukkan perhatian kepada masalah yang sedang dihadapi seseorang
tersebut.
1. Ungkapan simpati untuk masalah / hal kecil dan memalukan
- what's / that's pity
- poor you
- that's terribly bad luck.
- that's too bad

2. Ungkapan simpati untuk masalah yang besar / tidak menyenangkan
- i'm sorry

Dilihat dari konteksnya Supeksa mengalami kejadian yang tidak
menyenangkan. Dia gagal dalam tesnya. Ayu menunjukkan rasa simpatinya,
maka ungkapan yang tepat adalah " i am very sorry to hear that. "
